Materials - Bricks and Mortar for Key Stage 1

A fun, practical  two hour workshop using miniature ceramic bricks and mortar to make a shelter for an animal. This workshop supports the teaching of 'Materials' and 'Structures' and is for up to 30 pupils in Years 1 or 2, assisted by their class teacher.

The classroom will be transformed into a building site. The children will wear ‘Bob the Builder’ hard hats and be made aware of the Health and Safety requirements of working on a building site. Each child will have a miniature trowel and trough full of mortar and will be given instruction as to how to lay bricks and build a rigid wall.

How mortar is made from sand and cement will be demonstrated. The preparation of the building site and the need for using strong foundations will be discussed.

"A super day- the children have learnt a lot and it was wonderful to have such a 'hands-on' day. Our project for this term is 'Houses and Homes' so it fitted very well. The children particularly enjoyed building the brick wall, using the 'proper' tools - albeit in miniature. Thank You."
