Case Study - The National Skills Academy for Nuclear

The National Skills Academy for Nuclear teamed up with Teachers from Industry to deliver a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) primary school programme which promoted and supported the teaching of STEM subjects in primary schools.

Teachers from industry provided their own ‘specialist teachers’ to deliver workshops to students in schools, provided teacher training INSET days and produced a teacher’s resource kit.

Testimonial from Mary Kinsella, Communications Manager, National Skills Academy Nuclear

“The National Skills Academy for Nuclear approached Teachers from Industry (TFI) in July 2008 to discuss how a new product, targeting primary schools, could be developed.  Our approach to TFI was due to the excellent reputation that they have built, using their 20 years of experience, with a number of organisations we work with.

We asked TFI to implement a primary school electrical circuit workshop programme into primary schools in the Ellesmere Port area during October 2008.

The programme objectives were to:

1. Assess the relevance of the workshops to the National Curriculum and how the workshops can be enhanced to better achieve this.

2. Assess the effectiveness of the workshops in providing a product that will enhance the teaching of science, technology and engineering in primary schools.

3. Seek views from class teachers, head teachers, education advisors and others in education as to how the programme could be developed to ensure sustained teaching benefits.

4. Seek views from representatives of the Nuclear Industry as to how the programme could be developed to enhance the perception of the industry in the wider community.

5. Devise a product that will meet the needs of The National Skills Academy for Nuclear in achieving their goals and objectives.

From the very beginning the service we received from TFI was fantastic, they ensured that we were fully informed on all of the project developments throughout the project lifetime, we were also given the opportunity to watch TFI in action, which many of the staff did.  They delivered fully on all objectives and the feedback received from the people involved in the Skills Lab was excellent.  After the project was completed TFI completed a full project report covering all aspects and objectives.

The National Skills Academy for Nuclear would highly recommend Teachers from Industry to any organisation that is looking to work on the STEM agenda as part of their CSR.  Teachers from Industry always ensure best value for your budget and maximum impact where it matters – in the classroom.

We would not have any hesitation in working with them again, in fact we already have!”
